What I Did Over My Summer Vacation...
Over the summer, I read Wuthering Heights and Frankenstein. I cannot say that I recommend either of these books or say that I enjoyed them greatly. Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte, had a premise containing friendship, love, betrayal, and jealousy-all the makings of a good chick flick. I was sincerely drawn in by the characters of Catherine and Heathcliff and rooted for their love, even though Catherine was married to another man. If the novel had ended after Catherine and Heathcliff's final meeting, I would have absolutely loved the book, but alas, Catherine had a child and the story continued. The second part of the story seemed, to me, a repetition of the first part of it with a few changes. The same themes were repeated and the characters and their descendants even acted in the same way when faced with similar decisions. The second part of the story is a little more complex than the first, though, so it explores these ideas a little more in depth. Overall, I liked the novel, but I am not going to list it as one of my favorite books. Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, was another book that I liked reading, but I did not think it was amazing. Although this story is supposed to be one of the greatest in the horror genre, I was not scared by it at all, mostly due to the fact that I did not sympathize with any of the characters except for the killer, the creature itself. I believe that Victor Frankenstein is a spoiled character who consistently tried to command the sympathy of the reader, but never got it from me. His choices made me dislike him and when the monster that he created began to wreak havoc on his family because he did not care for it, I did not feel sorry for him at all because he brought his eternal misfortune upon himself. I thoroughly enjoyed the creature's viewpoint of the story, and I thought there were many themes in the novel that are extremely relevant in today's society-facing the consequences of your choices for one.
